Associação entre disfunção temporomandibular e depressão

A etiologia da disfunção temporomandibular (DTM) é complexa e multifatorial, mas, os estados emocionais como ansiedade, estresse e depressão são considerados atualmente como um dos principais fatores etiológicos da DTM. Este trabalho avaliou a associação do grau de depressão com a presença e gravidade da DTM. Foram entrevistados 56 indivíduos de ambos os gêneros, entre 19 e 41 anos, por meio do Índice de Fonseca, para avaliar a presença e gravidade da DTM e Eixo II do Research Diagnostic Criteria para avaliar o grau de depressão. Os resultados foram analisados através do Teste Exato de Fisher, adotando 5% de significância. Os resultados indicaram diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre a presença de DTM e o grau de depressão (p=0,033). Concluiu-se que a depressão pode ser considerada como um dos fatores etiológicos da DTM e que esta é mais predominante no gênero feminino.
